Stevenson's Depot [Va.], August 12th [1864] General Early out-generals all of us. No one can guess when he is going to move, or where he will next bring up. The Yankees begin to think him ubiquitous.

Charlestown, Va., August 21st--The enemy have a large force between us and Harper's Ferry,... and are contesting the ground most stubbornly. This is a mere feint to frighten them and cover some important move on our part. I have no idea we will fight here, for the enemy outnumber us three to one, and Early knows two well the importance of preserving his army.

--Bryan Grimes, GSA

Sunday 18th [August 1861, near Buckystown, Md.] Pedlers both black and white, brought into camp, pies, biscuits, cooked chickens, etc., which was a change from government rations. 0n the road outside of camp was a wagon with lager bier, lemonade and cakes, also a . . . pedler with tobacco, cigars, and wares of all kinds; as long [as] the money lasted, comfort was taken but when that was gone and credit with Ralph the sutler stopped, then bean soup, hard bread, bacon, etc., and fresh meat three time[s] a week, took its place.
