   Bill Sheehan

Col. William F. "Bill" Sheehan

The Mid-Missouri Civil War Round Table deeply regrets the passing of one of its longtime members Bill Sheehan. Bill was for many years was its main driving force behind the Round Table, serving as its president for a number of years and a proof reader to the editor of its newsletter. He will be missed by all of us.

Bill  was born Sept. 3, 1930 in the Bronx, New York but he grew up in Brooklyn. He  graduated from St. Francis College, Brooklyn in 1951 and after graduation he entered the Marine Corps. He had a long career in service to his country in that organization.

His oversees tours included Korea, Guam, Japan, Okinawa, Vietnam and Puerto Rico. Stateside assignments include Quantico, Camp Lejeune, Parris Island, and Headquarters Marine Corps. He retired in 1979 with the rank of Colonel. His last assignment was Chief of Staff, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Military honors included the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal.

He held graduate degrees from East Carolina and Pepperdine Universities. After retirement from the Marine Corps, he became a faculty member of the Central Methodist College from 1980 to 1991 when he retired as an "emeritius" faculty member.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Marine Corps League, Third Marine Division Association, the Retired Officers Association, Fayette Rotary Club, Fayette Roundtable Club, and the Columbia Country Club. He was a Fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

On fame's eternal camping-ground
Their silent tents are spread
And glory guards with solemn round
The bivouac of our dead
