Bob Hix gave
us a fine Power Point presentation on the Appomattox
Campaign, with a number of maps and pictures. He
carefully covered the period from General Lee's March 25, 1865
attack on the Federal position at Fort Stedman (Petersburg); Grant's
April 1st counterattack at Five Forks, where Lee's thin Confederate
line snapped; Lee's attempt to use the Richmond & Danville
Railroad; Lees 24 hour wait at the Amelia Court House for supplies;
the capture of about 10,000 of Lee's men on April 6th at Sayler's
Creek Lee's various losses and correspondence through the final
surrender on April 12th at Appomattox.
He also gave us a tour of the Appomattox village including the
Courthouse, the McLean House, the Clover Hill Tavern, the new jail,
the Woodson Law Office and many of the other restored buildings in
the village. Bob is quite interested in the village since that is
where some of his family, the Hix branch, comes from.
